What County Am I In? is a free, independent tool that helps people across the United Kingdom quickly find which county they are in. Whether you need to fill in a form, understand your local authority area, or simply satisfy your curiosity, our tool gives you an instant answer.
County boundaries in the UK can be confusing. With ceremonial counties, administrative counties, unitary authorities and council areas all overlapping, it's no wonder people search "what county am I in?" thousands of times every month. We built this tool to give a clear, reliable answer in seconds — completely free, with no sign-up required.
When you visit our site, we use Cloudflare's global network to estimate your approximate location and match it to a UK county automatically. This happens server-side using your IP address — no browser location permissions are needed and no personal data is stored.
For a more precise result, you can enter your full UK postcode (e.g. SW1A 1AA). We look up the postcode against official government data and return the exact county, district, parliamentary constituency and ward. Results are displayed alongside an interactive boundary map so you can see exactly where you are.
Our database covers the entire United Kingdom with 2,977 postcode outcodes mapped to 111 counties and administrative areas:
Our data comes from official UK government sources including the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Open Geography Portal and Ordnance Survey open data. Boundary maps use ONS county and unitary authority boundaries. All data is kept up to date to reflect the latest administrative changes.
We take your privacy seriously. No location data is stored, no cookies are set, and no tracking scripts are used. Postcode lookups are processed server-side and never logged. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
